Study reveals what Australians really think of the community sector

New research has highlighted diverse attitudes towards Australia's community sector, revealing key insights for leaders.

The Community Compass report, commissioned by Our Community and the Community Council for Australia, surveyed over 3000 people to understand perceptions of the sector, which includes around 600,000 organizations employing over a million Australians.

Key findings include:

  • 71% believe community organizations improve the world.
Sports and recreation clubs are most commonly associated with the sector.
72% think community involvement strengthens communities.
48% want to help more but lack time.
49% feel community groups should avoid politics.

The research identified six segments of attitudes towards the community sector:

  • Enthusiastic Engaged (20%): Active supporters.
Positive Preoccupied (16%): Supportive but busy.
Isolated Believers (16%): Advocate for more funding, prioritize service delivery.
Active Traditionalists (17%): Focus on caring over politics.
Indifferent Uninvolved (20%): Neutral or uninterested.
Begrudging Bygones (10%): Nostalgic, active contributors concerned about societal decline.

The study found most Australians agree that the community sector makes the world a better place, with half the nation keen to contribute more to the sector if they had the spare time. But the report also uncovered stark differences in views about community funding, advocacy and participation.

Charities Minister Andrew Leigh called the findings a "call to action," urging better support for the sector to build a cohesive society.

Dr. Rebecca Huntley from 89 Degrees East noted mixed sentiments, with barriers to involvement and differing views on funding and advocacy.

David Crosbie, CEO of the Community Council for Australia, emphasized the report's value in informing debates about the sector's role and perception.

The Community Compass report provides crucial insights for policymakers, community leaders, and citizens to better understand and support Australia's vital community sector.
