Happy World Social Enterprise Day 2024
Thursday 21st November is World Social Enterprise Day, so you may be wondering what exactly is a social enterprise?
There's no legal definition, but some of the more commonly accepted definitions in Australia (and the ones we use) include:
- organisations that have a defined social, environmental or community purpose that is consistent with a public benefit, and
- organisations that derive the majority of their income from trading activities (not grants and funding) and
- organisations that use/reinvest their resources into their social, environmental or community purpose.
There's other definitions that are being used globally that refer to People & Planet, but we think they miss Place (extremely important for indigenous Australians) and non-human creatures (couldn't think of word starting with P for all of them).
The way we think of it is that if a charity and a business had a baby, it would be a social enterprise! Greatest Good is a certified social enterprise and also a certified B Corporation.
We think that social enterprises are pretty special organisations often tackling the hard work that government and business fail to address. So, keep an eye out for our social media post on Thursday highlighting some of these amazing organisations.
In the meantime, check out some of the amazing social enterprises and other for-purpose organisations on Greatest Good offering a great range of gift hampers, gift packs, gift boxes and other gifts and products in the Australian Christmas Gift Guide.
