Director's Guide to AI Governance
While forms of Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been used for many years, the development of Generative AI has prompted widespread discussion of its impact on the economy and broader society. Although AI promises significant productivity and economic gains, there are potential risks from AI system failures and abuse.
As stewards of organisational strategy and risk management, directors have a key role to play in creating appropriate guardrails that allow AI’s benefits to be appropriately harnessed. This requires a robust governance framework that can adapt to the unique characteristics of AI systems.
In partnership with the Human Technology Institute (HTI) at the University of Technology Sydney, the AICD has developed a new suite of resources to help boards navigate the ethical and informed use of AI.
The resources comprise:
- a Director’s Introduction to AI which aims to provide foundational knowledge of key AI concepts and issues (if you are new to AI we suggest you start here);
- the Director’s Guide to AI Governance which outlines eight elements of safe and responsible AI governance;
- a concise Snapshot of the ‘Eight elements of safe and responsible AI governance’; and
- a SME and NFP governance checklist.
The AICD hosted a complimentary webinar to further discuss the practical application of the resources.
They hope that by applying their guidance, directors can oversee the deployment of AI systems for maximum strategic and competitive advantage.
